Landmark 100% renewable energy bills introduced

Legislation introduced today by Rep. Yousef Rabhi (D-Ann Arbor) and Sen. Stephanie Chang (D-Detroit) would set a 100% renewable energy standard by 2050 for Michigan, requiring utilities to get 100% of their energy from renewable sources by 2050.

Achieving 100% renewable energy is a critical and necessary step to curb toxic air and water pollution and mitigate the impacts of climate change.

The Michigan Environmental Council applauds the introduction of House Bill 5420 and its Senate counterpart and issued the following statement in response:

“From historic high water levels to flooding to more frequent heat waves, Michigan is already experiencing the extreme weather and health and economic hardships that are brought on by climate change,” said Charlotte Jameson, program director for legislative affairs, energy and drinking water policy for the Environmental Council. “If we are to avert the worst impacts of climate change we must act now to fully move towards renewable energy. A transition to 100% renewable energy by 2050 is achievable and can be a source of economic opportunity and lower energy costs for Michiganders while also protecting public health and our environment.”
