Environmental Council applauds 50% by 2030 accord

Windmills turn along an autumnal countryside in mid-Michigan

Michigan Environmental Council applauds the Clean Energy, Healthy Michigan ballot campaign and utility companies DTE Energy and Consumers Energy for reaching an agreement today that will see 50% of the utilities’ energy portfolio made up of clean energy resources no later than 2030. This announcement is a big step forward for clean energy in Michigan and is a win for our air and water as well as Michigan ratepayers.

The commitment by Consumers Energy and DTE Energy to generate at least 25% of their power from renewable sources by 2030—while also hitting a 25% energy waste reduction benchmark—will ensure that Michigan continues to enjoy the economic, public health and environmental benefits that clean energy development has delivered over the past decade.

Since state lawmakers enacted current clean energy benchmarks in 2008—later extending them in 2016—solar and wind developers and energy efficiency manufacturers and contractors have created tens of thousands of good jobs in the Great Lake State. In addition to saving consumers millions and driving down the price of renewables, our clean energy laws have spurred major air quality improvements and reduced our energy sector’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

While achieving the GHG reductions necessary to avoid the worst consequences of climate change will require far more ambitious mid-Century goals in our energy and other sectors, this agreement is another vital step in the right direction.

The Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) will oversee implementation of this commitment through its review of the integrated resource plans (IRPs) that the utilities must file under state law.

As a leading voice and formal intervener in MPSC proceedings, the Environmental Council will do everything in our power to ensure this commitment is fully implemented and the benefits to our state are fully maximized. The Environmental Council is committed to ensuring Michigan’s transition to clean energy is equitable and delivers the best possible deal for residential ratepayers.
