Tamara El-Khoury joined the Michigan Environmental Council in August 2024, bringing 20 years of development and communications experience. Tasked with implementing the development activities of the Environmental Council, Tamara is most passionate about building relationships with individual donors to support missions they are passionate about.
A former journalist for Florida’s largest daily newspaper, Tamara stumbled into the world of philanthropy, beginning as a Grant Writer for the largest human social services organization in her birthplace of Washington, D.C. and hasn’t looked back.
She has held numerous roles in her fundraising career including as a major gifts officer for a child abuse prevention nonprofit in Minneapolis, director of development for the Lansing area’s Catholic Charities agency and most recently as director of the Center for Arab American Philanthropy, the nation’s only Arab American community foundation.
She holds a degree in Journalism and Government & Politics from the University of Maryland and speaks conversational Arabic and French.
Tamara has lived in seven different states and is proud to be raising her two children in East Lansing which she has called home since 2016. When she’s not raising funds for the critical work of the Environmental Council, she can be found reading a good book, traveling internationally with her husband or on a soccer field, either coaching, cheering or playing.
