Member Group Representative, Michigan Recycling Coalition

Contact

Kerrin O’Brien joined the Environmental Council board in 2025.

She is the executive director of the Michigan Recycling Coalition, of which she’s served in two stints totalling 24 years. Kerrin and her nonprofit have led, educated and mobilized businesses, government, nonprofits and individuals to improve their own and contribute to collective resource use and recovery efforts.

Kerrin previously ran her own consulting firm, helping environmental nonprofits like Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council and Michigan Nature Association with strategic planning and other projects. She’s also served on numerous environmental and recycling commissions and councils at the local, state and national levels. Rounding out Kerrin’s experience is a bachelor’s degree in social science at Michigan State University and executive director training with the Institute of Conservation Leadership.

As an Environmental Council board member, Kerrin will help guide our efforts to reduce waste in Michigan. She already has a great headstart on this—the Michigan Recycling Coalition she directs is a longtime leader and partner in the field, and Kerrin has long served on the Environmental Council’s policy committee.

When the Lansing resident is off work, she enjoys getting out into Michigan nature, doing a variety of projects at home, making homemade gifts and spending time with her two great kids and two great cats.
