Democracy & Good Governance

Michigan was once a national leader in environmental stewardship. But over the last few decades we have seen backsliding on critical protections that have left our lakes plagued with algal blooms, our cities and towns inundated with toxic air, and the agencies charged with protecting our natural resources unable to make and enforce key rules. As we work to heal these decisions that have eroded environmental protections and increased injustices in our communities, we must ensure that our rulemaking authority as a state is completely restored.

Our vision for change

Cut red tape, restore transparency, streamline accountability and incorporate impacted environmental justice communities into decision making.

Explicitly grant our state

the ability to set environmental rules, especially around factory farms and groundwater.

Repeal the law

establishing industry-led "polluter" panels—like the Environmental Rules Review Committee and the Permit Appeals Panel.

Provide additional enforcement and inspection powers

for the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy to address polluting industries.
