Internships: Policy, Communications and Operations
The Michigan Environmental Council offers hands-on internships for passionate individuals in environmental policy, advocacy and nonprofit operations, providing meaningful work, mentorship and professional development.
Current Opportunities:
- Energy & Climate Policy Research Internship (Fall 2025): Focuses on energy policy research and legislative engagement. Interns will learn about the legislative process, practice advocacy skills, and conduct policy research on topics such as utility affordability and building decarbonization.
- Land & Wildlife Policy Internship (Fall 2025, Spring 2026, Summer 2026): Emphasizes policy research, grassroots engagement, and advocacy event planning for land and wildlife issues. Interns will learn to interpret state legislation, engage with lawmakers, deepen policy knowledge, and create deliverables like a critical dunes one-pager and a policy brief on critical dunes/neonics.
- Communications Internship (Fall 2025, Spring 2026, Summer 2026): Support MEC’s communications team in content creation, design, and nonprofit communications strategy for print, digital, and social platforms. Interns build a portfolio while learning how communications drive advocacy.
- Operations & Event Planning Internship (Fall 2025, Summer 2026): Provides experience in nonprofit operations, event planning, administrative systems, and organizational development. Interns will support major MEC events, strengthen internal systems (including Salesforce CRM), and conduct research for recruitment, fundraising, and community building.
Internship Details
Location: Lansing, Michigan (hybrid opportunities may be available)
Compensation: Environmental Council internships are unpaid, but we will work with you to ensure you receive college credit.
