Job Opening: Movement Building Coordinator

Created in 1980 to lead Michigan’s environmental movement, the Michigan Environmental Council is a coalition of more than 100 organizations with offices in Lansing and Detroit. The Environmental Council combines deep environmental policy expertise, close connections to state and federal decision-makers and relationships with broad alliances to achieve positive public policy solutions to our most challenging environmental issues.
Position:
Reporting to the Movement Building Director, the Movement Building Coordinator helps ensure that the team is recruiting new member organizations and stewarding existing ones. This is an excellent role for a talented early-career leader looking to build their engagement skills or a veteran organizer eager to help build Michigan’s environmental movement.
The Movement Building Coordinator plays a key role in strengthening and expanding our statewide network by cultivating relationships with existing members, connecting them to resources, and showing up in person to support their events and initiatives. This position also helps grow our coalition by building trust with new organizations and inviting them into our shared work. The ideal candidate will be an excellent listener and connector, comfortable engaging with people and organizations across backgrounds, geographies, and issue areas. A strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion is essential, as is a belief in the power of relationships to drive systemic change.
Responsibilities:
Membership recruitment & onboarding:
- Lead outreach to potential new member organizations across Michigan.
- Conduct introductory meetings to share information about Council membership and the ECOsystem.
- Facilitate onboarding of new members, including communications, meeting setup and CRM/spreadsheet updates.
- Coordinate member approvals and updates with staff, Executive Committee and full membership.
Membership Retention & Engagement:
- Support mass and personalized outreach during the annual membership dues campaign.
- Maintain accurate member records and communications lists.
- Assist with member communications, renewals and ongoing relationship-building.
Event & convening support:
- Assist with planning, outreach, and logistics for the ECOsystem Conference and quarterly member meetings.
- Provide support for member award processes, including outreach and coordination (e.g., Petoskey Prize, ECOPrize).
Cross-team collaboration & communications:
- Coordinate with communications, policy, and development staff to support strategic member engagement.
- Draft and distribute the monthly member e-newsletter in collaboration with the Communications team.
- Contribute to targeted campaigns, including ballot initiatives and regional outreach efforts.
Organizational liaison roles:
- Serve as staff liaison to the Detroit Environmental Agenda coalition.
- Coordinate with the CEO and Executive Committee on the Environmental Council Board of Directors engagement.
- Prepare materials for new Board member approvals and secure “Mission Moment” speakers.

Minimum qualifications
- One to three years of experience in nonprofit engagement work (coalition building, multi-organization project management, etc.)
- Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently
- Ability to collaborate across teams and work on multiple projects simultaneously
- Professional proficiency using Zoom, Adobe Acrobat and Google Suite (Drive, Gmail, Calendar, Docs, Sheets and Slides); ability to effectively use spreadsheet software is essential
- Exceptional written and oral communication skills
- Experience working with diverse constituents, teams, and colleagues
- Ability to work well independently and as part of a team
- Aptitude to learn new applications
- Passion for the Environmental Council’s mission, members and partners
Other position notes
This position is hybrid, and the expectation is that this position will be available to attend meetings and events in the Lansing and Detroit offices as well as member events across the state.
Compensation package
The Environmental Council offers an industry-leading compensation package. The Movement Building Coordinator position includes a salary of $59,000-68,000 commensurate with experience; full medical, dental and vision benefits; organizational matching to a 403(b) retirement program and a flexible schedule with unlimited paid time off.
