Michigan Climate Action Network helps communities take action against climate change

Michigan Environmental Report
Though he made a name for himself as a venture capitalist, Tom Porter may have been destined to be an environmental activist. “It’s sort of in my DNA,” he admits, recalling frequent childhood treks in the woods with his father, a botanist. “We couldn’t walk for more than 25 feet without stopping to look at another plant.”

David Ermisch and Craig Lamberton: Celebrating marriage with MEC

Michigan Environmental Report
Though he now lives on the East Coast, it’s clear that Cheboygan-raised David Ermisch still loves Michigan’s Great Lakes and wild places. For one thing, he didn’t let a late-summer cold front with temperatures in the 50s stop him from swimming in Lake Michigan during a visit to his family’s cottage in the Upper Peninsula. And when Ermisch took a different kind of plunge in June, he and his new husband, Craig Lamberton, urged their wedding guests to make a contribution to the Michigan Environmental Council in lieu of a gift.

Dave Dempsey: Author, historian, policy expert and steadfast defender of the Great Lakes

In Memoriam: Helen Milliken

Michigan Environmental Report
There’s a darn good reason that the state’s top environmental honor is not simply called the William Milliken Distinguished Service Award. It is properly called the Helen & William Milliken Distinguished Service Award in recognition that both the former governor and his wife made their own substantial legacies in protecting Michigan’s natural resources during the course of their careers. The award is presented annually by the Michigan Environmental Council.

Blair Miller: Building a sense of place in his community

Michigan Environmental Report
Blair Miller’s life is a contact sport. He’s scrapped with what he describes as the “good old boy network” in rural Vermontville Township, where he was elected to the township board before getting broomed in a recall election. He learned to fly planes in three weeks—insisting on landing at Chicago’s Midway Airport during training because: “If I’m going to fly, I’m going to learn how to do it in the busiest place.” And in response to a running dispute with the University of Michigan, Miller once mowed a massive block “M”—framed by a circle with a line slashed through it—in the fallow field outside his home. Private planes would fly by to see the oversized protest.
