NAACP campaigns for Proposal 3
The NAACP has launched its Your Energy, Your Power! Campaign to Increase Clean Energy, including their support for Proposal 3.
“Increasing our renewable energy standard to 25 percent by 2025 is the key to achieving the twin goals of reducing pollution that disproportionately endangers minority families and rebuilding Michigan’s manufacturing industry,” said Yvonne White of the Michigan State Conference of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). White is also a Michigan Environmental Council board member.
“This issue is not new to us,” said White. “The Michigan NAACP has long been at the helm of increasing awareness and understanding of social and environmental factors that affect health and wellness for communities of color, which also affirm the right of all to earn a living wage and pursue opportunities for economic prosperity while having access to clean water, air, food, and to live on uncontaminated land.”
According to a 2011 NAACP report, Coal blooded: Putting profits before people, one-third of all people living within three miles of a Michigan coal plant are people of color.
“Increasing Michigan’s renewable energy standard is one of the best opportunities to reduce pollution from imported coal and oil, and reduce the high rates of asthma, lung diseases and other illnesses that put people’s lives at risk,” said Pam Smith, health chair of the Michigan State Conference of the NAACP. Smith is also an MEC board member.
