The Au Sable gets a scouring
Volunteers galore hit the water the weekend after Labor Day for the Anglers of the Au Sable’s 13th annual River Cleanup, scouring more than 90 miles of stream. Folks from all over the Midwest and as far away as Pennsylvania participated this year, according to event founder Rusty Gates. Five cubic yards of debris were collected, much of it non-returnable water and juice bottles (expanded Bottle Bill, anyone?). The classic Au Sable Riverboat was used as a garbage scow for the day, floating behind the wading teams, gathering up bags too heavy to carry out. The volunteers were treated to lunch afterward—250 brats and 100 pounds of hamburger. Then, they fished.
