MEC applauds mileage standards

President Barack Obama proposed aggressive new automobile mileage standards in an announcement shortly before press time for this issue. The following is an edited statement released May 19 by the Michigan Environmental Council.

The Michigan Environmental Council today applauded President Obama’s plan to establish responsible, uniform mileage standards that will slash greenhouse gas pollution from new vehicles and make the nation more energy independent.

“This gives certainty to auto-makers, will make American consumers less dependent on foreign oil, and is perhaps the most significant single step our nation has made to date in slowing the emission of climate altering pollution,” said Chris Kolb, president of the Michigan Environmental Council. “It is one step—and a significant one—on the road to a better energy future.”
