Michigan Environmental Council statement on Michigan v. EPA

Jun 29, 2015
Michigan Environmental Council President Chris Kolb issued the following statement today in response to the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in Michigan v. EPA:

"This ruling is an unfortunate setback for efforts to protect public health.

"The Supreme Court's decision is based on a technicality and does not change the fact that mercury, acid gases and other toxic hazards cause serious health problems for children, pregnant women and seniors. It also doesn't change the EPA's legal mandate to regulate these dangerous chemicals.

"By taking the lead in this case, Attorney General Schuette has created regulatory uncertainty for power companies, caused a harmful delay in efforts to make our air safer to breathe, and made Michigan look to the rest of the country like a state more interested in protecting polluters than protecting public health."
